Stand Taller with Pilates

I was an active yogi and danced for the love of it right up until my late 30’s. Then I got a mortgage, a fancy new job and a whole lot more responsibility. I was injuring myself in yoga and becoming less and less active as I focused on my career.

My life looked amazing on paper but day-to-day I found my knees hurting, my fingers going numb, stubborn belly fat, and the beginnings of a dowagers hump. At the same time, exercise and self-care were dismissed in favor of getting one more thing crossed off the to-do list. UGH.

I took a friends suggestion to try Pilates and my world changed. Within my first 10 sessions my knee pain had subsided as I incorporated the movement I learned in the studio into my daily activity. But something else was happening as well, my legs looked longer. I could not believe my eyes but I also looked taller! For a petite woman at 4’11 this was GOLD.

Within a year I was regularly attending classes and private sessions. Having a 1:1 appointment with my teacher held me accountable to show up and to maintain a quality of movement through my workout rather than just hanging in my joints and faking it.

While my previous experience with Pilates led me to believe it was a bunch of sit-ups, my experience with Fletcher Pilates is that its a moving meditation requiring breath, control, precision, and focus. All the while building strength and elongating my body. Today I stand a little taller and stronger, with less pain and a true belief that movement can heal.
